Te Maire Park Community Stage | Commercial
ShannonWhen the Shannon community envisioned a space where local voices could be heard and celebrations could unfold, Slate Architecture & Construction stepped forward to transform that vision into reality. The Te Maire Park stage project represents more than just construction, it's about creating a cultural heartbeat for an entire community.
Located along State Highway 57 in Shannon's town center, Te Maire Park serves as both a gateway to the town and a cherished community gathering place. This high-profile reserve, spanning over a hectare, already housed the war memorial, historic railway station, and educational facilities. What it needed was a stage where the community's stories could come to life.

The Challenge
-
With Better Off Funding requiring completion by June 2025, and the Shannon Community eagerly planning their Matariki celebration for June 20th, there was no room for delays.
-
The stage demanded an 8m x 5m performance space with a 700-750mm platform height, covered by a shelter with no middle support posts - creating an unobstructed view for audiences. Accessibility requirements meant incorporating both stairs and ramps meeting New Zealand Standard 4121:2001
-
The design needed to seamlessly connect with existing pathways while respecting the park's established character and the significance of the war memorial gardens.

Slate's Integrated Approach
-
Lead Project Manager Brett Wycherley recognised that this project required Slate's unique dual capability in both architecture and construction. Rather than juggling multiple contractors and potential communication gaps, the council benefited from a single point of accountability.
-
Slate's architectural team developed a concept that honored the park's heritage while creating a modern performance space.
-
With detailed design approval secured by May 5th, 2025, Slate's construction team mobilised immediately.
-
The Shannon Community's excitement was high as they planned their Matariki celebrations. The accessible design ensures everyone can participate, whether as performers or audience members. The strategic location along State Highway 57 means the stage will also serve as a showcase for Shannon, welcoming travelers and potentially boosting local economic activity.
-
This project exemplifies why clients choose Slate's integrated design and build approach. Brett Wycherley's project management ensured seamless coordination between design intent and construction reality. When challenges arose, solutions could be implemented immediately without the delays typical of multi-contractor projects. The Te Maire Park stage stands as proof that thoughtful design, skilled construction, and community collaboration can create spaces that truly serve their purpose, bringing people together and celebrating the unique character of Shannon.
